4 of the best onboarding practices for 2019

A key challenge for any organisation is how to best integrate new starters and ensure their transition into a new company and role is positive and successful. Making sure a structured onboarding process takes place is paramount. Here’s four ways to help you make sure new starters are prepared.

Personalised onboarding practices

One of the key trends for 2019 is the utilisation of personalised onboarding practices. A little bit of attention can go a long way; making sure only accurate and relevant onboarding paperwork is presented to the new starter and welcome messages are developed around the person and their position. In addition, regularly checking-in and catching up with the new hire to make sure they are getting on well and addressing any concerns is also a key aspect of this.

Automation

In recent years, Recruitment departments and agencies have began to seek out ways to automate elements of the recruitment process that are longwinded or labour intensive. Things that automation can help with: scheduling new starter meetings, distribution of key company forms and preparing manual training materials such as worksheets. The recruitment automation landscape currently encompasses over 70 different technologies and it’s growing which means much more assistance with onboarding new starters in the future.

Microlearning

What is Microlearning? An official definition by elearningindustry.com states: “Microtraining delivers short bursts of content for learners to study at their convenience. Content can take many forms, from text to full-blown interactive multimedia, but should always be short.”. As a learning method, Microlearning is much more effective than other methods of learning (transfer of learning is up to 17% more effective and up to 50% more engaging). As a result, it is ideal for the onboarding process and ‘getting started’ training.

Mentorship

The impact of other employee mentorship within the onboarding process should not be overlooked. It establishes a precedent about what to expect from a company and provides the new starter with an experienced employee to ask any questions to and to provide guidance. A mentor will play a key part in a new starters initial development, provide a positive first impression of the company and the culture as a whole.

The onboarding process is the first impression a new starter will get of an organisation and can leave a lasting impression. Are there any other trends you have recently adopted for your onboarding process? Let us know at [email protected].
